This has been interpreted by the courts as an increased standard of care that requires the professional to render services in the practice of his profession that exercises the skill and knowledge normally possessed by members of that profession in good standing in similar communities. Professional liability insurance arose from this legal duty to clients and third parties for breach of contract and negligence lawsuits.

Specialized applications/supplements are required for binding, however, indications can be provided using other company applications. Although not always required for indications, resumes, job histories or project lists, sample contracts and brochures will assist in the underwriting process and will typically result in better pricing and terms. Note that this is especially important for new ventures when there is no experience to rely on and the application reflects projections of income and services.
